[Ada_list] Art History of Games co-located conference

Apologies if you receive this more than once - please forward on to those who might be interested, as the deadline is tight.
--

Art History of Games co-located conference
August 26-29, 2013
Atlanta, Georgia, United States
http://dm.lmc.gatech.edu/digra2013/

The second Art History of Games symposium will explore the relationships between games, art and history. Indeed, the title of this co-located conference -- the Art History of Games -- is intended as a provocation. Do games have an art history? Should they have an art history? Can they have a history in the same sense that painting, sculpture and architecture did until the mid-20th century? Is there a clear and identifiable relationship between games and art? What about histories of art games/games as art/games for art's sake? What is happening to such creations and their history, as they age? What resources might existing disciplines such as Art History provide for thinking through these and other questions, and where might they need rethinking, supplementing, extending?

The Art History of Games symposium will be co-located with DiGRA 2013 in order to take advantage of the confluence of game makers, scholars, technologists, theorists and critics. We encourage submissions from all corners of the worlds of art, games and history: contemporary art world, the indie game scene, the game industry, academics studying and making games, media artists, art and media historians, and beyond.

Dear ADA,

The ADA Network is happy to confirm dates for
the Netwalking Tour, a
series of workshops and master classes with
UK-based media artist Simon
Pope from March 16th - April 14th
2013.

Pope will lead three public workshops hosted by the ADA Network
in
Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, which will draw upon his
recent
work of walking-as-art. The ADA Network will also host a
residency
period in Whanganui and coordinate a trans-tasman
collaboration with a
residency at the University of Wollongong,
NSW.

The Netwalking Tour will focus on the themes emerging from Pope's
recent
projects such as The Memorial Walks (2008), A Common Third (2010)
and
Memory Marathon (2010). These projects involve walking with others
to
negotiate routes as a way of exploring relationships between people
and
our relationships with 'land'. In 'A Common Third', (2010), Pope
walked
with others to jointly-negotiate unfamiliar terrain through hills
and
mountains, which later formed the basis of an audio
installation,
drawing parallels between processes of working together
and models of
dialogue.

[Ada_list] ADA 2012 and 2013

Dear ADA

We had a busy year behind the scenes in 2012, getting ready for some major projects in 2013.

The first big event for ADA in 2013 is The Netwalking Tour, a series of workshops and master classes with UK-based media artist Simon Pope that will take place in April. Pope will lead three public workshops in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, which will draw upon his recent work of walking-as-art. (http://www.ada.net.nz/projects/simon-pope-netwalking/)

In 2012 the ADA Network received funding from CNZ through the Kahikatea scheme for the first two years of a project called "Mesh Cities Christchurch". This will be a series of events held over 2013-15 addressing the role of media arts in the city – exploring key issues such as urban space, social engagement, memory and speculative futures.

Over this period the ADA Network will host major symposia and a series of workshops and speaking tours. These events will be held in various locations throughout New Zealand, however the overall reference point for Mesh Cities will be the role of media arts in the rebuild of Christchurch. (http://www.ada.net.nz/meshcities/ada-mesh-cities-christchurch/)

(Some of you responded to my request back in May for examples of media art projects engaging with urban space, with some great examples of projects. I didn't acknowledge that sufficiently at the time, but it all fed into the Kahikatea application process, so thank you for all the examples that you contributed)

More details about these events will be announced very soon, and there will be rolling updates on the ADA website (http://www.ada.net.nz)

The ADA website itself now features a lot more content, thanks to the amazing efforts of our intern Sophie Davis. Sophie did a huge amount of work updating the website and developing a plan for us to better communicate what we do. We're still working on that last part, but the website now features a full copy of the ADA reader, and updated library and project pages.

We're also very happy to be able to announce that the CNZ Kahikatea funding has enabled us to employ Vicki Smith as project manager for Mesh Cities. Vicki will be working on Mesh Cities part time over the next two years, and she will be making the first announcements for the project in the next few days.

On behalf of the ADA board, I hope you all had a relaxing and replenishing summer break,
And we are looking forward to having a lot more ADA activity for us all to participate in in 2013.

Zita : )

Furchick (Claire Pannell) from Perth, Australia is excited to be

touring the North Island of New Zealand in January. Claire has

organised two performance at two new venues that she hopes will become

part of the New Zealand original new music landscape.

Claire is a prolific DIY noise-art maker, who incorporates science

into her creations. She takes her sounds from the natural vibrations

created from everyday objects. Some of her past projects include

playing with the Laundry Room Squelchers (USA) at the International

Noise Conference in Sydney and Melbourne, playing drums in Gerard

Cosloy's improv noise project Air Traffic Controllers in NYC and jam

bands including Sexy Band with Chris Cobilis in Perth, The Armaround

with Tom Greenwood's Jackie O Motherfucker and the Crawley Creeps with

Josh Diamond of Gang Gang Dance in the USA. She has performed at Sound

Summit in Newcastle and last toured NZ in 2011. She is included on

several on-line album projects for New Weird Australia and the

upcoming Ladyz in Noize CD. She once played in the notorious nineties

Palmerston North band C.U.N.T. (aka Claire's UnNatural Twin), and

industrial metal act Froithead. https://soundcloud.com/furchick,

Claire is excited to be performing with a line-up of who's-who of New

Zealand artists from the purely experimental extreme noise to the

darker side of heavy beats.

Stanier Black-Five is a Christchurch-based sound artist whose work is

largely based on the manipulation of her own environmental recordings

and found sounds. She uses these to create dense soundscapes that use

sources such as mesmerising aircraft drones to the pounding rhythms of

trains and recently the sounds of the earthquakes that have shaken her

city. stanierblackfive.com/https://soundcloud.com/stanier-black-five

Antony Milton has been active in the underground/noise community for

20 years, performing and recording under a variety of names as well as

running the PseudoArcana label. Recently his music has taken an

overtly psychedelic and ecstatic turn....recently as in the last week.

Rob Thorne (Ngati Tumutumu), a Palmerston North musician of 25 years

experience, has been researching, playing and performing taonga puoro

since 2001. In the last 3 years he has been developing and performing

epic-length orchestrated compositions using live loops that allows him

to ensemble the instruments in a way that is musically & culturally

challenging and beautifully ambient. http://robthorne.bandcamp.com/,

I.R.L. is Richard Benjamin Keys and friends, performing sleazy android machine funk, post-rave electronics and noise induced neural re-wiring
