[Ada_list] UpStage 10th Birthday Programme Announced

/== apologies for cross-posting//==/
/*
The 10th birthday of UpStage will be celebrated on 9-10 January 2014
with three performances, a symposium on remote collaboration, a planning
meeting and the launch of UpStage v3.

*/*The full programme is now online at
http://upstage.org.nz/blog/?page_id=5734*

Since 2004, artists and students around the world have collaborated via
the internet to create real-time interactive performances
(cyberformance) using the web-based platform UpStage. Annual festivals
have involved hundreds of artists and thousands of audience members, and
a strong community has developed. To celebrate ten years of UpStage,
three new performances have been created; a networked symposium -
between Wellington, Munich and other locations - will address remote
collaboration; and a planning meeting will bring together key people to
discuss possible futures for UpStage.

_*UpStage v3*_

The third version of the UpStage software will be launched at the
birthday celebrations. Incorporating full audio-visual streaming, new
features and many enhancements, v3 has been developed by Martin
Eisenbarth (Germany) and the UpStage student team at Auckland University
of Technology (New Zealand). It is a significant leap forward for the
software, not only in terms of features and usability but also in
stability and documentation.

_*Three New Cyberformances*_

Five veteran cyberformers and their collaborators are busy creating
three new works to be presented at the birthday celebrations: /Vita
Cyberformativa/by Miljana Peric', /Balloon/by Petyr Veenstra, Floris
Sirag and Gabriella Sacco, and a new work by Etheatre Project and
collaborators.

Miljana Peric' first became involved in UpStage in 2006, and has
presented work at all but one of the festivals. Her energetic and
humorous shows blend theory with politics, and always have strong audio
content, reflecting her background as a musician, ethnomusicologist and
sound artist. The trio creating /Balloon/previously presented /A Plunge
in the Pool/at the 121212 UpStage Festival and /Flat Earth/at 11:11:11.
With backgrounds in theatre, visual arts and music, the group's shows
are like audiovisual poetry, gradually unfolding stories through rich
imagery and haunting text. Etheatre director and theatre researcher
Christina Papagiannouli explores and discusses political issues through
cyberformance. Previous work has addressed the Egyptian revolution (/The
Cyberian Chalk Circle, /2011) and the Greek crisis (/Merry Crisis and a
Happy New Fear/, 2012). For this new work, she has gathered an
international group to develop a performance that uses internal European
migration as a starting point.

_*The Networked Symposium*_

An online symposium addressing the topic of remote collaboration in
cyberformance and networked performance will accompany the performances.
Hosted by Signalraum (Munich) with guest speaker Annie Abrahams, the
symposium aims to provide a space for reflection, discussion, and
analysis. Audiences will be able to participate online as well as at the
venues in Munich and Wellington. Remote presentations will be given by
Isabel Valverde (Portugal) and Christina Papagiannouli (London).

_*The Planning Meeting*_

A meeting in Wellington and online will discuss the current situation of
UpStage and plan for its sustainable future in an increasingly difficult
economic climate.

ANAT is calling for applications from artists and scientists/researchers
for the prestigious Synapse Residency program. Now in its eighth round, the
program is a core element of the Synapse initiative of the Australia
Council for the Arts and ANAT, which supports collaboration between artists
and scientists.

The residencies are open to Australian artists working in any discipline
and/or medium. Residencies shall take place over 16 weeks full-time (or
part-time equivalent) during the 2014 calendar year.

To ensure a good fit between the artist and host organisation, a joint
application must be submitted. It is the responsibility of the applicants
to establish contact and to identify the nature of the proposed
collaboration prior to application. Those with existing relationships are
strongly encouraged to apply.

The residencies have a creative research focus and it is not expected that
they will result in the production of new work. The residencies may also be

[Ada_list] Call for Filmakers to join the Film on Wheels event at the Dunedin Fringe

On behalf of Lena Plaksina,

We are organising a mobile cinema for the 2014 Dunedin Fringe Festival. I am hoping filmmakers in the ADA network will be interested in submitting their work for this special event.

Film on Wheels

- Film will be an important part of the 2014 Festival, not least because we are creating an event specifically to showcase film makers.

The Festival Kiosk, otherwise known as a small caravan, will be fitted out as a mobile cinema and will be touring the city and suburbs in the lead up to and during the Festival.

This is a chance for filmmakers to showcase their work to a wide audience. We are looking for innovative and experimental films under 15 minutes in length in any genre and suitable for a general audience.

An application form for Film on Wheels can be found on the Fringe Festival website (http://landing.dunedinfringe.org.nz/). The deadline for applications is 30 November 2013.

Please also distribute this call out to those who may be interested in participating!

Please contact me at events.fringe@gmail.com if you have any questions or comments about the event and/or the application process.

Kind Regards,
Lena Plaksina

[Ada_list] ALTMUSIC PRESENTS MERZBOW ON TOUR IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS!!!!!

One of the most extreme and uncompromising musicians of the 21st Century is coming to New Zealand this November - playing all major centres!!! Worshipped internationally for his brutal, speaker destroying sonic assault, underground Japanese industrial noise musician Merzbow (Masami Akita) is a true legend for both his relentless solo releases since 1980 (via Tzadik, Digital Hardcore, Extreme, Relapse and his own ZSF Product) and his crucial collaborations with heavy-hitters Boris, Genesis P-Orridge (Psychic TV), Eye (Boredoms) and more! DON'T MISS OUT on this pivotal tour by the definitive dark master of Japanese noise – presented by Altmusic. Bring earplugs, this show will be LOUD!

Delving deep into otherworldly extremes of industrial, metal machine noise and beyond, Merzbow's blistering output runs the gauntlet of his definitive brand of Japanese noise - from charred & blackened subterranean lows to interstellar cosmic highs. Punishing, remorseless frequencies pour forth in a relentless onslaught of pure sound, decomposing electronic textures devolve into tsunamis of brutal guitar wreckage. Impossible to pin down due to his uncomprehendingly vast ouvre, simultaneously contemplative & aggressive, Merzbow's sound is way beyond music, it simply IS.

"Think of those artists who overpowered the grind of their eras: Bach, Wagner, Miles Davis, The Beatles - all of these people were consistently displaced of their time by the striking originality of their work... there is a case for including Masami Akita (Merzbow) in such a group." - Pitchfork
"Everyone should own at least one Merzbow record." - Tiny Mix Tapes
"Though the work is largely atonal and non-harmonic, it is bursting with timbre and texture and vibrancy" - The New Yorker

Thanks to Asia New Zealand Foundation for their support of this tour. This tour is part of Altmusic's programme of independent & adventurous international musicians touring New Zealand in 2013 – special thanks to CNZ for their continued support.

[Ada_list] Announcing: Play It Again's Popular Memory Archive

Dear friends/colleagues,

I wanted to let you know that the Popular Memory Archive has launched, and is now open for business! This is the work of my New Zealand and Australian game history and preservation team, known as Play It Again. In it, you'll find an exhibition on 50 locally written computer games of the 1980s. You can read about our endeavours in the story/press release below, or just check it out for yourself, at www.playitagainproject.org<http://www.playitagainproject.org>

Let the blogging begin! Upload your files! Contribute your memories!

Please help us to get the word out to those who are in the know about 1980s games history.

Regards,

Melanie Swalwell

@AgainPlay & http://www.facebook.com/playitagainproject

Creating a piece of playable history

Games are one of the most significant cultural forms of modern society yet their story is poorly documented in Australia and New Zealand, according to Flinders University Screen and Media Associate Professor Melanie Swalwell.

Associate Professor Swalwell and her research team, together with colleagues from the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the New Zealand Film Archive and the Berlin Computerspiele Museum, have now launched a project to document and preserve locally-made computer games of the 1980s.

Funded by the Australian Research Council, the Popular Memory Archive (PMA) aims to explore the story of the production and reception of local games, interviewing game creators but also collecting resources and memories from the public who played their way through the history of 1980s computer games.

"The game culture in the 1980s was highly participatory, hands-on and often characterised by a do-it-yourself ethic which is why we are aspiring to create a history of games as they have been used and experienced," Associate Professor Swalwell said.

The material will then be collated and added to the Play it Again database – an online portal of playable Australasian computer games, developed by the team as a method for documenting and preserving these historic digital artefacts.

Dr Swalwell said the database would provide vital insights into Australia and New Zealand's early gaming history.

"Until recently, digital software in any form wasn't regarded as something that should be saved," Associate Professor Swalwell said.

"As a consequence we have very little information about computer games, despite the prominent cultural function they have in today's society," she said.

Flinders PhD candidate Helen Stuckey, who helped design the PMA, said there was no official public record of historic computer games.

"Knowledge about the history of games is overwhelmingly held by private collectors and fans, with ephemera and other primary sources located among the general public," Ms Stuckey said.

"Much of the existing work on the preservation of early games has been be done by passionate and well organised online fan communities," she said.

"The PMA in part looks at what institutions can learn from the practices of these groups."

Featuring a curated selection of games, Dr Swalwell said the PMA will also host monthly panel discussions with invited guests, including Australia and New Zealand game designers of the 1980s, on a range of topics such as gaming pioneers, collectors and copyright.

"We want to hear what people did with early computers and games, what games they wrote, what these games mean and meant to them, what records they have, and what difference their involvement with games made.

"It is hoped these contributors will offer not only their experiences but also artefacts in need of preservation, including images, videos and documentation about programmers, designers and publishers, so that we can have a central, publicly-compiled repository of gaming history."

During the 18-month project users will be able to submit comments, images, videos and other files to the site.

Visit the website<http://www.playitagainproject.org> for more information or follow the progress on Twitter @AgainPlay or at facebook.com/playitagainproject.

[Ada_list] CFP (updated): Born Digital and Cultural Heritage

CFP: The Born Digital and Cultural Heritage, 19-20 June, 2014, Melbourne

Online at http://playitagainproject.org/conference/call-for-papers/

(The CFP has recently been updated to include information on an optional technical proceedings, for people who would like to pursue this ahead of the conference. We are also excited to announce Henry Lowood as a confirmed keynote speaker. Read his speaker profile at playitagainproject.org/conference/call-for-papers/speaker-profile-dr-henry-lowood)

Whilst many artefacts today are produced, distributed and consumed solely in digital form, this situation is not completely new. Artefacts from previous eras have also been 'born' digital. The advent of micro- or home computers in the mid-1970s and 80s, for instance, saw a range of digital artefacts produced, amongst them digital games, demos, and other early software. These objects are complex and interesting as are the preservation challenges they pose. To issues of hardware and software deterioration are added characteristics such as real-time responsiveness, highly-invested fan communities, and the earliness with which decisions about significance and preservation strategies must be arrived at. Games preservation is emerging as an experimental domain where some of the thorniest issues in born digital cultural heritage are confronted. No longer a niche endeavour limited to those who played titles 'back in the day', developments in games preservation and related field
s are of relevance to many different cultural forms, their scholars and custodians. Playability also creates interest in and enlivens the preservation message, making it easier for non-specialists to grasp.

We invite proposals for papers, panels, and workshops for an international conference on The Born Digital and Cultural Heritage, to be held at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne, 19-20 June, 2014. Recognising that born digital artefacts often require multiple sets of expertise, we are keen to receive proposals from researchers and practitioners in the range of disciplines, spheres of practice and institutional contexts concerned with born digital heritage. This includes libraries, archives, museums, galleries, moving image institutions, software repositories, universities, and more besides. Proposals might be theoretical, practical, policy, or otherwise oriented. Case studies of innovative practices, papers based on research with born digital artefacts, and new institutional approaches are equally welcome.

Possible topics include:

* Born digital histories

* Born digital items as cultural heritage

* Changing notions of the collection

* Vernacular digitality

* Selection, appraisal, deposit

* Jurisdictions, overlaps, gaps

* Resourcing, funding, partnerships

* Archiving of media arts, architecture, broadcasting, etc

* Relation of born digital preservation to digitisation programs

* Inter-agency cooperation, federations and networks

* Models of collaboration, outside experts, volunteers

* Access and exhibition

* Legal issues, intellectual property, orphaned works, legal deposit

* Workforce, capacity building, training

* New preservation and conservation techniques

* Case Studies and Best Practices: Processes, Metadata, Systems,
Services, Infrastructures

We hope you will join us to engage with research and practice in those fields which underpin such critically important matters as the accessibility of born digital cultural heritage, now and into the future.

This conference is organised by the Play It Again team, a games history and preservation research project focused on microcomputer games created in 1980s Australia and New Zealand. Play It Again is a multidisciplinary project involving scholars from Humanities, Computer Science, and Law from several Australian and New Zealand universities, working collaboratively with cultural heritage professionals at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the New Zealand Film Archive, and the Berlin Computerspiele Museum. Play It Again received 3 year project funding (2012-14) under the Australian Research Council's Linkage Projects scheme.

There will be a separate cultural sector workshop on the 18th June at Melbourne University, at which the Play It Again team will be sharing some of the learning from the project.

To propose a paper, please send an abstract of 300 words, plus keywords and references, and a brief author biography to playitagain@flinders.edu.au Abstracts are due 15 November, 2013.

Publication: It is anticipated that there will be at least one publication following the conference. Authors who would like their full conference paper to be considered for publication in a proceedings before the conference - in the Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology series - must follow a separate set of timelines and processes during the Call for Papers period.

Abstract submission deadline: 15 November 2013
Paper submission deadline: 29 November 2013
Author notification: 28 February 2014
Camera-ready paper due: 4 April 2014

Instructions for Authors (for the CRPIT Proceedings only): Papers should be no more than 10 pages in length, and conform to the formatting instructions for the Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology series. Resources for authors:
http://crpit.com/AuthorsSubmitting.html

Each paper will undergo double-blind review by at least two reviewers. Papers will be judged on originality, significance, technical quality, and relevance to the conference. Accepted papers will be included in the proceedings of "The Born Digital and Cultural Heritage conference", to be published by the Australian Computer Society in the Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology series http://crpit.com. Submission of a paper will be regarded as an undertaking that, should the paper be accepted, at least one author will attend the conference to present the work. The proceedings are included in the ACM digital library and indexed on Scopus and DBLP.

[Ada_list] MINA 2013 Symposium, Screenings and Workshops explore the expansion of mobile and social media technologies

From November 18 – 22, 2013 AUT University will be the home of a series of
events exploring mobile technologies in film, education, business and

changed the way people interact and communicate. These emerging
technologies of the small screen are now at the heart of our society and

The 2013 MINA Symposium and Screening is centred around the question, 'how
are mobile and social media technologies used to support innovation,
society and creative development?' and will seek to answer this question
through presentations of academic papers, workshops, poster presentations,
performances, project showcases and mobile screenings in situ and via live
web-broadcasts.

The events are co-hosted by MINA (Mobile Innovation Network Aotearoa),
Colab (AUT University) and the School of Art & Design (AUT University) in

interaction with the urban environment and to understand, respond to,
evaluate and question the transformations that the city is undergoing.

[Ada_list] Audio Foundation Residency program - call for proposals. Please distribute!

The Audio Foundation is excited to announce that we are now accepting proposals for our newly established Audio Foundation Artist Residency program! The residency runs for a three week period in Feb 2014. all proposals are welcome and will be considered. We encourage all artists with a sound related practice (emerging to established) to consider applying for this residency – the closing date for proposals is 15th November 2013.

The Audio Foundation Artist Residency program will provide NZ artists with the exciting opportunity to make work in a context free of traditional day-to-day pressures, to focus on their work for a sustained three-week period. The goal of this residency is to produce outcomes in the form of adventurous and well realised new work presented to the public.

The Audio Foundation artist residency is a trial program in Feb 2014

• It is open to all NZ artists who have a sound-related practice.
• The residency provides access to a spacious studio/performance space and PA facilities based in the Audio Foundation (Auckland NZ).
• The artist in residence will work towards an artist-determined outcome to be presented at (and/or in association with) the Audio Foundation and will be encouraged to engage with the local community during the residency period. This may take the form of workshops/presentations/discussion
• The residency is only open to individual artists.
• Airfares, a per diem and a contribution to accommodation will be available to the recipient

The Audio Foundation Artist Residency aims to facilitate the research and development of significant sound-related work – to develop individual art practices and foster professional and artistic opportunities for the participants. Specific goals and expected outcomes for the residency will be determined with the artist on a case-by-case basis, for example: performances, exhibitions and/or recordings. The project would be consistent with the Audio Foundation's aim to assist NZ sound (and related) artists in creating new work that can be presented to the community in a professional context. For established artists, work towards a larger project outcome will be considered. This residency is open to candidates from all of NZ / Aotearoa.

The artist participating in the residency program will be provided with spacious studio space and full PA facilities in the heart of Auckland's CBD, in an arts centre dedicated to the promotion and critical discussion of their works. The Audio Foundation would encourage the artist to engage with the local community during this period in activities such as workshops, sound walks and/or panel discussions. The residency and its outcomes will be promoted by the Audio Foundation.

While the AF will be providing studio / performance space for the artist-in-residence, it will be necessary for the artist to organise their own accommodation during the residency period. The Audio Foundation will lend all assistance possible in finding accommodation for non-Auckland artists.
Please note that we can only pay for travel within NZ.

Proposals will be accepted for consideration up until November the 15th, 2013. The recipient will be selected via peer-review administered by the Audio Foundation.

[Ada_list] World water day 2014 call for proposals

WATERWHEEL WORLD WATER DAY SYMPOSIUM 2014

WATER VIEWS: CARING AND DARING

17- 22 March 2014

Held on the internet platform Waterwheel with 12 nodes in 5 continents

For full information go to:
http://bit.ly/3WDS14_call_En

Scientists, academics, artists, architects, urbanists, engineers, practitioners, activists, inventors and water drinkers are invited to submit projects and papers (25-minute presentations), performances (up to 20 minutes), panels and workshops (3 hours maximum and panels must include at least 45 minutes of discussion), on the theme "Water Views: Caring and Daring".

As an element, water embodies extremes and contrasts: oceanic depth or shallow rivulet, transparent or opaque, flowing or still. Water cycles through the living systems of the planet: water bodies, life forms, atmosphere. Climate change has produced global water extremes in terms of sea level rise, polar ice disappearance, floods, droughts and desertification. Is water a shared resource or a commodity that is bought, sold, owned and wasted? While we might not all share the same perception of water, exploring deeper connections to it may facilitate a greater understanding of how our collective views have influenced actions and decisions about water. 3WDS14 will explore questions about how we are living, and will continue to live, with water and its contrasts. There is a demand for new perceptions and approaches to water management, urban planning, and cooperation, as well as for a renewed respect for water as a vital resource and shared heritage.

The symposium encourages transdisciplinary approaches that include the following sub-themes:

Histories of human perceptions and practices pertaining to freshwater and seawater
Knowledge of our vulnerabilities and conflicts, needs and trends, success and failures involving water
Communication facilitating our collective goals, plans, values and dreams for water, as well as the governance and stewardship that would facilitate them.

So far, there will be nodes in San Francisco, New York, Buenos Aires, Tunis, Berlin, Coburg, Poznan, Torun, Paris, Syracuse, Athens, Hydra and Cairns. We also welcome proposals for new nodes.

[Ada_list] Celebrating Peace - call for works on Water and Peace

Celebrating International Peace Day with a call for projects on Water and Peace

SCANZ2015: Water*peace

Water is essential to survival, revered and respected worldwide for its power, curative and creative abilities. Water as a resource has become intensely politicised and monetised, in contrast to the view that access to fresh water is a fundamental human right. Peace is also essential to the sustainability of humans on Earth. Join us to discuss and put forward positive, connecting views on water and peace that engages our community. This is the first call for projects and residency with submissions due November 8, 2013.

Full details at: http://www.intercreate.org/2013/09/water-peace-call/

Noho marae
SCANZ2015: water*peace will be the fifth SCANZ residency and starts in January 2015. It will commence with noho marae (overnight stay) at Parihaka, world renowned as a site of peaceful protest. The stay coincides with the 18th and 19th, when Te Whiti and Tohu leaders of the peace movement are celebrated.

Open residency
This will be followed by a two week open, creative and interdisciplinary residency. It is our hope that tangata whenua, indigenous peoples, New Zealanders and other global citizens will be able to take part.

We are suggesting that artists, environmentalists, technologists, scientists, writers, performers, dancers, permaculturalists and people interested in the positive aspects of water and peace, all take part. Anyone can submit a project in one or more of the categories listed further down this page.

Temporary works in public space
We would like to have five to seven temporary works in public space, shown for one day or overnight on the final weekend of the residency. These will be sited along a river walkway. No power will be provided at the sites, so solar, wind, and water powered projects are suitable (battery and static install are two further options).

Day of public activities about water, water quality and peace
We are seeking proposals for a day of activities that engage our local community in issues around water and peace.

Night time building projections
We are seeking projection works about water or peace, to be projected on to the side of a local building in the evening.

Online exhibition
Links to water and peace resources online will be collated. Included will be a curated selection of online projects about water and/or peace.

SCANZ hui
On the final weekend of the residency there will be a SCANZ hui. Day one is at WITT, the local polytechnic and allows for presentations that require technology, the internet, projectors etc. Day two is a walking symposium to view the artworks and have thematic discussions in the environment of the river walkways.

Categories of projects
Water and/or Peace residency and temporary public work (residency with public exhibition project)
Water and/or Peace residency (residency without an exhibited project)
Water and/or Peace temporary public work (no residency, public exhibition project)
Public activity day project
Night time projection on building
Online exhibition
Pure research

The application process can be found at http://www.intercreate.org/2013/09/water-peace-call/

Applications due 8 November 2013.

A separate call for hui/symposium presentations and a second call for projects will be made at a later date.

Re: [Ada_list] ADA AGM 2013 - new trustees needed!

Kia ora koutou Su, Stella, Zita, Julian, Ana, Vicki and all ADA members
pls accept my apologies for today and send love to Dunedin - thanks for the work of the Otago crew in hosting the symposium.
I'm at a Loomio retreat on the kapiti coast and sense very strongly that the digital arena is becoming increasingly complex and loaded and the work of ADA in maintaining critical debate is still vital.
Go well this weekend

Re: [Ada_list] ADA AGM 2013 - new trustees needed!

Dear ADA,

Some more information about the announcement of the ADA AGM to be held at the Dunedin Symposium.

ADA is a charitable trust with a small trust board (6 people), and everyone who is subscribed to this list is a "member" of ADA (currently about 300 people). The structure of ADA means that members can tell the trust what to do, instigate projects under the name of ADA, guide the direction of ADA, and apply to join the trust board. The time has come for some new energy to enter the trust board - and this means YOU!

As you all know ADA has been run by a hardworking trust board since 2008. The current trustees are: Su Ballard, Zita Joyce, Stella Brennan (elected 2008), Julian Priest (elected 2009), Ana Terry (elected 2010), Vicki Smith (elected 2011).

Stella and I have tendered our resignations, to take effect at the AGM on Sunday 2pm (NZ time).

We hope that this means that ADA can enter a new dynamic phase, and we really hope that some of you will put your hands up to participate in steering the good ship ADA.

You do not have to be in Dunedin to participate (you do not even have to be in New Zealand.) ADA is a distributed board that makes full use of the networks it was founded on. If you have questions, or want to be more involved but maybe not on the trust, please make sure you talk with Vicki or Zita over the weekend (before the Sunday meeting), or drop them a line!

All the best,
Su

Re: [Ada_list] Ada_list Digest, Vol 126, Issue 2

Tena Koe,

Please accept my apologies, I'm sorry to say I can't make the AGM in
Dunedin this year as I have a Paemanu, Ngai Tahu Artist Trust to attend
and I am the Treasurer for that and need to make my report. This is
Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th.

Maybe next year I can travel north for the next.

Nga Mihi
Nathan

Hi,

Really pleased to announce the following (on the Intercreate site page
there is a developed artist statement about the project):

Laser Karakia Artwork Selected as Media Art Project

A project that utilises laser light technology to carry sound has been
selected as the Intercreate Media Art Project 2014. Ko Tatou Te Tangata
by Stuart Foster and Kura Puke, with Dr Te Huirangi Waikerepuru and Te
Urutahi Waikerepuru, will employ oscillating lights to carry both the
human voice and environmental sounds.

The technology was tested at SCANZ, an artist residency held at WITT in
New Plymouth earlier this year. Laser beams were sent to a light
receptive panel that had speakers connected. The result was that waiata,
karakia, karanga and sounds of moving water were transmitted. For the
SCANZ project, the karakia was contributed by kaumatua Dr Te Huirangi
Waikerepuru with the tangata whenua, Ngati Tawhirikura.

Kura Puke (Tapuke) has whakapapa to the hapu of Katere ki Te Moana
marae, which extends from the clifftop at Fitzroy, to Te Rewa Rewa Pa on
the coastal walkway. Both Puke and Foster are lecturers at Massey
University Wellington, while Te Huirangi Waikerepuru and Te Urutahi
Waikerepuru direct Te Matahiapo Research Organization based in New
Plymouth.

For the Media Art Project they wish to deepen the engagement with
tangata whenua and locals, and investigate how to ?transform an
environment often seemingly subsumed by commercial industry into an
awareness of the dynamic layered diversity of the land? which involves
embracing ?the intangible and the unseen energies? to inquire into and
visualise ideas about, wairua (essence), mauri and the virtual.

As the commissioner of the work funded by the Arts Council of New
Zealand Intercreate is extremely pleased with the calibre of the
project, and the way advanced technology is integrated with the local
environment, local community groups and customary Maori knowledge.

Altmusic is thrilled to announce Laurel Halo (US) touring New Zealand
throughout September in 2013!

Higher harmonic energy is the keystone of Laurel Halo's music, which
challenges the boundaries between techno, ambient, pop concrete, dub and
synthetic psychedelia. Fixed stylistic territories fold in on
themselves, time quickens - it's music for transit and body listening.
Halo's live set has electrified dance clubs, DIY venues, festivals and
museums both in the States and Europe.

In the live context Halo's music becomes heavy, looming and dancefloor
driven. A hugely acclaimed artist in the world of electronic music,
Laurel Halo's debut album Quarantine (Hyperdub) was named the Wire
magazine's #1 album of the year for 2012. Halo's recently hailed Behind
The Green Door EP explores the sexually charged common ground between
abstract electronics and club-driven beats.

"She's a sharp, and sometimes tantalizing performer who knows how to
deploy wobble, drone and nervous energy in refreshing fashion." - New
York Times

?Quarantine feels like something new flickering into being, some strange
new cyborg in the process of being birthed: a frankenstein of pop,
noise, ambient, industrial, and a ?hypnagogic? continuum that takes in
the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Actress, Dean Blunt, and Inga
Copeland, the new New Age and Not Not Fun? - Tiny Mix Tapes

?There are plenty of disarmingly pretty moments ... on Quarantine, yet
even those strive for unsettling effect, finding beauty in uncertainty,
confidence in the embrace of the unknown.? - Pitchfork

This will be a unforgettable performance by an electronic dance artist
at the height of her powers - don't miss out!
