last year or so, & as tonight's performance is the last of our current
World Tour, we would love to have your presence with us again :)

[Ada_list] Akousmalfore - interactice plants at SCANZ

While SCANZ 2013 is called 3rd nature, it wasn't expected that so many works would engage with living plants, and this has become a distinct thread woven through the projects.

We are all aware of the strong element of environmental awareness in electronic art practice, which is the result of a number of forces ranging from personal perspective to the liberation of art from the gallery and a need for data. By 2012, this relationship to environment has well passed the prototype stage of tentative experimentation, and is in the developed stage of projects.

Take for example 'Akousmaflore' by Scenocosme. This work has evolved over a period of years to go from the simple activation of audio by basic sensors, to a degree of instrumentation based on the speed and proximity of your hands to the plants.

That allows for greater levels of play between audience and plants, and it is in the reflective period after engaging with the plants that a deeper level of understanding of the project occurs. What was initially play becomes a platform to reconsider our relationship to plants. Plants are usually viewed as static objects to be passively experienced. In' Akousmaflore' a dynamic is introduced, that involves acting with plants in non routine ways.

It does not take much further reflection to then see that the project is pointing to considering in what ways humans are integrated with plants. That consideration opens up a range of ways we have relationships to plants, from digestion to psychedelics. We come to see that actually, humans and plants are very closely related.

make-shift is a networked performance about connectivity & consequences;
the show explores issues of disposability, obsolensence, and the
interconnectedness of our domestic lives with the greater ecology. it's
humourous, participatory and thought provoking.

the two performances this week are the end of a 15-show tour that has
seen make-shift presented from ordinary homes in the UK, USA, france,
italy, germany, austria, serbia, india, australia and new zealand.
tomorrow i'll be performing from providence, rhode island, and for the
last show on thursday 28th, we will be in our home towns of exeter and
munich.

[Ada_list] 121212 - a Banquet of Cyberformance!

Bigger, longer and tastier than ever – at the sixth annual UpStage Festival we will savour old favourites and spice things up with new platforms and technologies.

The 121212 UpStage Festival of Cyberformance features 36 live performances created and presented in a variety of online platforms. UpStage, the Tap, Second Life, Visitors Studio, Skype and purpose-built interfaces provide the sites for these innovative shows created specifically for real-time interaction with online audiences.

There are two sections to the festival:
Walking Backwards into the Future
A retrospective of 19 remounted cyberformances celebrating the large and diverse body of work that has been generated through the past five UpStage festivals; 5-11 December 2012.

Call for collaborations in the advanced workshop for project pevelopment
Interactivos?'12 Dublin: Hack the City. Current and Future Needs, that
takes place in July 11 - 26, 2012 in Dublin (Ireland).

Collaborators will participate in the production of selected projects
that will create an experimental laboratory to channel hacker culture,
and allow artists, designers, makers, doers, data nerds, hobbyists,
citizen scientists, tech geeks, activists, edgy engineers and DIY urban
planners to take control over the resolution of problems that affect and
link together worldwide 'communities of concern'.

[Ada_list] Reminder - SCANZ 2013 symposium deadline June 15

Hi,

Abstracts for SCANZ 2013: 3rd nature symposium and hui presentations and papers, are due by June 15th. Our intention is to meet PBRF standards for research outputs. The hui/symposium would be for next years research outputs. By the same token, both peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed strands are available.

Aotearoa New Zealand is in a unique and leading position worldwide due to the length of the discussion with tangata whenua. Former Crown Research Institutes such as NIWA and GNS, and government departments such as DoC have staff whose position entails being active at the boundary of Maori and scientific knowledges. While tangata whenua remain disadvantaged in overall terms, this position of knowledge bases side by side is far from the situation in many countries.

Many of you will have excellent insight into working across cultures and engaging with digital media and the environment. It would be great to see you at SCANZ 2013. Working across cultures is not viewed as only referring to the Maori/European border, multicultural situations are relevant.

The key components of what we are seeking are presentations that involve either working across cultures or across disciplines (or both).

Keynote speakers: Dr Te Huirangi Waikerepuru and artist-scientist Nina Czegledy (Adjunct Associate Professor, Concordia University)

"We know we have built a civilisation which is unsustainable. How are we developing today the new culture that will allow us to create a sustainable civilisation?" — Roger Malina, Astrophysicist and Editor of Leonardo.

Integrating indigenous perspectives with creative, environmental, scientific and academic views on reality is essential to a sustainable future. At the same time, computing and digital media are changing our relationship to culture and the environment.

On the one hand digital technology allows us to analyse and display data in new ways, as when anthropologists use language databases to shed light on the movement of culture.

On the other hand digital technology adds to our senses, and extends them beyond the body to the forests and the land. Scientists (along with artists and others) are transforming Aotearoa New Zealand into an organism, as Maori have always known it to be.

SCANZ 2013: 3rd nature will bring together diverse people to discuss and celebrate how to approach working together across culture, discipline and media. We must work together to resolve the issues emerging at the boundary between fresh knowledge and deep knowledge, beginning with sharing knowledge and projects.

Presentations and projects which highlight cross cultural interchange and/or computing and electronics projects are sought. The ensuing discussion, exhibition documentation and presentations will then be shared in a special edition of Leonardo Electronic Almanac, the online publication of Leonardo – the leading Massachusetts Institute of Technology journal. Abstracts are due June 15th 2012. A robust process will be followed.
