[Ada_list] Looking Back into the Future - a symposium on artist moving image practice 29th -- 31st August 2013, Auckland

Looking Back into the Future - a symposium on artist moving image practice
29th -- 31st August 2013, Auckland
Venues: Academy Cinema, Elam School of Fine Arts, The
Audio Foundation

With over 40 years of artist moving image production in New Zealand,
what is the current state of local practice, and how do we create a
dynamic and sustainable future?

Featuring film screenings, discussion and an artists' workshop,
Looking Back into the Future invites the New Zealand artist moving
image community to Auckland this August 29-31.

Over three days a range of international and local presenters come
together to consider issues of the surrounding production, networks
and value in moving image.

Presented by CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa New Zealand in
association with Elam School of Fine Arts at The University of
Auckland, and with the support of the British Council and Creative New
Zealand, Looking Back into the Future takes place at three venues.

Beginning at the Academy Cinema 8pm, Thursday August 29, All Divided
Selves is a film by UK film-maker Luke Fowler. Based on the work of
radical Scottish psychiatrist RD Laing, the film examines Laing's
assertion that mental illness is a natural result of modern day social
systems. As the film progresses from the 1960s onwards, we see the
impact of Laing's theories on the medical establishment, and the less
forgiving response to Laing's latter day career as a celebrity poet.

Day 2 (August 30) at Elam School of Fine Arts begins with a roundtable
session examining every facet of the artist moving image economy: from
curation to collection. International and local speakers gather to
ask: how can institutions better support new models of moving image
practices? How do we develop networks and exchanges that generate
meaningful dialogue and sustainable engagement? Panelists include
Benjamin Cook (Director LUX, London) and Dr May Adadol Ingawanij,
(University of Westminster/Bangkok Experimental Film Festival), plus
local speakers Alex Monteith (Artist, Academic, Elam School of Fine
Arts), Michelle Menzies (Curator, Adam Art Gallery), John McCormack
(Starkwhite Gallery) and Sue Gardiner (Chartwell Trust). In the
afternoon three film screenings curated for the symposium feature
recent work from New Zealand, Asia and the United States, and are
followed by discussions about networks and distribution.

On Day 3 (August 31) keynote speaker Benjamin Cook, (LUX, London)
leads a workshop for artists entitled The Auratic Film. In an age of
digital technology and endless reproduction this workshop asks; can
the moving image be described as having a distinct presence or aura?
Is there such a thing as a primary encounter with a film and if so
what does this say about how work is disseminated and how it accrues
both cultural and economic value?

Looking Back into the Future Schedule:
Thursday August 29, 8pm: All Divided Selves, Academy Cinema. Tickets $8
Friday August 30, 10am-5pm: Looking Back into the Future, Elam School
of Fine Arts. Free entry
Saturday August 31,10am-1pm:The Auratic Film, The Audio Foundation.
Tickets $40. Register for the workshop via director@circuit.org.nz

*Intermission: An audio portrait of place*
*Open call for radio projects - Deadline September 9*

ECHOES is a programme of events for the city of Lisbon
that explores the experience of LISTENING and PLACE. Part
of this programme is a series of curated radio broadcasts
in partnership with Stress.Fm and the Lisbon Architecture
Triennale. The programme invites a rethinking of the role of
radio and its ability to intervene within local and international
communities.
*
*
*Our second broadcast,*
*19- 22 September, is **titled 'Intermission'.*

'Intermission' invites an international response asking you
to make an 'audio portrait' of your locality by recording a 20
minute walk- mapping the air space between a and b.
The ambition for this project is to create a 3 day radio
broadcast that maps a patchwork of sonic landscapes from
Bristol to Bangalore, Lisbon to L.A and Mexico City to Milford-
On-Sea.

*All tracks will be fully credited with weblinks on the Echoes site.*

Seven Octaves plus a Minor Third; Artists respond to the keys of the piano.
Audio Foundation
5.30 pm
Thursday 8 August

Exhibition curated by Amelia Harris

The piano is a standard of sorts, organising the playing of music into a monochromatic world of straight lines and rectangles, from which much clunking and beauty has been born. This exhibition gathers together members of the sound community, musicians, pianists and those humble clunkers to examine the piano, key by key.

Participants:

Isobel Thom
Stephen Bain
Stefan Neville
Ducklingmonster
Erena Johnson
Ian-John Hutchinson
Hermione Johnson
Balamohan Shingade
Colin Woods
Ben Holmes
Angeline Chirnside

Larissa Allen
Gabriel White
Jenny Laycock
Markus Hofko
Karin Hofko
Eli Orzessek

Amelia Harris is an artist, curator, film producer and dabbler. She likes to take a look at places and objects that have become stale, or need to be re-examined, for the pleasure and challenge of reinvigoration. Amelia produced the feature film 'Oracle Drive' that premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival this year, curated public programs for The Film Archive for 3 years, as well as producing a couple of feature documentaries on Auckland with Gabriel White. As an artist Amelia has shown at the George Fraser Gallery, Gus Fisher carpark - Auckland International Arts Festival 07, The Fine Arts Library, St Paul St and most recently at Rm as part of 'Expanded Map'.
