[Ada_list] Reminder Call for entries: VIDA 14.0 Art and Artificial Life International Awards
VIDA Art and Artificial Life International Awards begun in 1999 by
Fundación Telefónica, was created with the mission of supporting
creative endeavours in this singular field by rewarding the pioneering
efforts of artists. We are now pleased to announce the launch of the
VIDA 14.0, which for the last 14 years have been rewarding artistic
projects developed with technological media that offer innovative
insights into the study of artificial life. At a time when the concept
of life finds itself once again in uncharted territory, a wide range
of artistic initiatives attempt to illustrate and explore this
phenomenon, examining its impact on our collective consciousness and
how it affects the cultural, technological and social mindset. Over
the past decade, VIDA has welcomed a variety of interdisciplinary
projects that respond to this situation and brought them together in a
single forum. Using formal strategies that push the boundaries between
existing practices, these projects offer new perspectives that force
us to reconsider our pre-existing notions of life and artificial life.
As in previous years, contestants are invited to submit proposals in
one of two categories:
CATEGORY "FINALISED PROJECTS"
In this category, Vida 14.0 rewards artistic artificial life projects
developed after the year 2010. A total of 40,000 euros will be divided
among the three winning projects chosen by the jury: First Prize:
18,000 euros; Second Prize: 14,000 euros; Third Prize: 8,000 euros.
Seven honorary mentions will also be awarded to projects chosen by the
jury from among the finalists.
CATEGORY "INCENTIVES FOR PRODUCTION"
In this category, Vida 14.0 helps to finance artistic artificial life
projects that have not yet been produced. It is reserved for artists
who are citizens or residents of any country in Latin America, Spain
or Portugal. This category is also endowed with 40,000 euros to be
divided among the selected projects.
IMPORTANT DATES
Project submissions must be submitted before midnight (Central
European Time) on 30th July 2012.
JURY
Submitted projects will be reviewed by an international jury
consisting of Mónica Bello (Spain), Jens Hauser (France), Martin
Kaltenbrunner (Austria), Karla Jasso (Mexico), Sally Jane Norman (New
Zealand/France), Nell Tenhaaf (Canada) and Francisco Serrano,
Executive Director of Fundación Telefónica.

Call for collaborations in the advanced workshop for project development
/Interactivos?'12 Ljubljana: Obsolete Technologies of the Future/, that
takes place in September 5 - 15, 2012 in Ljubljana (Slovenia).
Collaborators will participate in the production of six prototypes in
the fields of art and technology using existing or outdated technologies
in an entirely unexpected way to encourage novel approaches, promote
sustainability, and explore possibilities in the far future.
The collaborator is basic in the planning and development of the
workshops of Medialab-Prado, thus these are conceived as spaces for
collaborative work, knowledge exchange and theoretical and practical
training. It is an environment in which there is a horizontal
relationship among professors, developers and the collaborators.
Workshop advisors: Luka Frelih (director of Ljudmila, artist,
programmer), Ida Hiršenfelder (art critic, art consultant), Chris Sugrue
(artist, programmer) and Yago Torroja (hardware, electronics).

2nd International Mobile Creativity and Mobile Innovation Symposium

Mobile Innovation Network Aotearoa

As part of the BLOW Festival 2012, the MINA symposium will take place in the College of Creative Art's magnificent new Te Ara Hihiko building.
MINA [www.mina.pro] is an international network that promotes cultural and research activities to expand the emerging possibilities of mobile media. MINA aims to explore the opportunities for interaction between people, content and the creative industry within the context of Aotearoa/New Zealand and internationally.
The symposium will provide a platform for filmmakers, artists, designers, researchers, 'pro-d-users' and industry professionals to debate the prospect of wireless, mobile and ubiquitous technologies in art and design environments and the creative industries. MINA invites paper proposals relating (but not limited) to; mobile lens media, iPhoneography, mobile video production, mobile-mentaries (mobile documentaries), mobile network and transmedia, mobile communities, mobile media and social change, mobile visual arts, mobile locative media, citizen journalism, mobile visual literacy, mobile media in education and mobile technologies and civic media.
Mobile phones have evolved rapidly from a communication device to a creative and educational tool. For communities world-wide mobile technologies provide access to a vast amount of new services. Mobile media has also established new forms of connectivity and sociability within contemporary art and design practices. The current mediascape can be described as a dynamic ecosystem that has seen the emergence of new media aesthetics and formats, such as iPhoneography and mobile-mentary (mobile documentary) filmmaking. The participatory turn in media culture (collaboration, co-creation and crowd-sourcing) also creates new opportunities and challenges for visual communication design. (Mobile phone) users (or rather pro-d-users), artists, designers, filmmakers and independent creatives can define new modes of mobile media practices transcending the realm of established disciplines and transform the contemporary mediascape. Innovative business models utilise mobile apps and redefine the distribution of media content. Mobile devices enable us to see the world from new viewpoints and angles. The 2nd International Mobile Creativity and Mobile Innovation Symposium will explore these developments and dynamics in a transdisciplinary context.
Paper proposals should be submitted by the 15th August 2012. MINA also welcomes presentations in a variety of formats including workshops, poster presentations, performances, project showcases and screenings. The international symposium will also provide the opportunity to present papers via live video and live web-broadcasts.

The drive for 'open' in tertiary education—be it 'open education,' 'open research' or 'open access'—is quickly gaining steam. In May, the academic senate of the University of California San Francisco joined Harvard and MIT to announce that all current and future research would be made available to the public. In December 2011, the British government made a commitment to provide open access to publicly funded data.
At the same time, academics are experiencing tensions between the drive to make publicly funded research openly available and the need to publish in 'prestige' journals. International movements such as Open Educational Resources (OER) are helping to guide teachers and researchers through these murky waters. These movements are also working to lower the cost of producing educational resources, in order to supply them online to educators, for free.
How can twenty-first century researchers and tertiary education providers navigate their rights and responsibilities in regards to their work? How do we help realise 'Open Research' and its relationship to 'Open Government'? What are our expectations for 'Open Education'?
Join us for an evening of information and discussion on the Open Research and OER Movements in tertiary education.
Speakers will include:
- Dr Fabiana Kupke, Senior Lecturer, School of Medical Sciences, University of Auckland
- Professor Anne Fitzgerald, Queensland University of Technology Law Faculty and Creative Commons Australia

Our starting point was the notion of post-millennial tension – the idea that in the decades following the year 2000 we find ourselves living in an era that was meant to be the future, but where many of our futuristic hopes and fantasies remain unfulfilled. Worse, our historical visions of hyper-technological futures seem to have propelled us into a perilous position where humankind may not have any kind of future at all. In the space between ever-hopeful techno-futurism and the realities of a world forever changed by the pursuit of the resources required to fuel it, we asked if the age-old concept of utopia still has the strength to generate galvanising visions of the future."
