[Ada_list] SCANZ at Balance-Unbalance
Nina Czegledy, Trudy Lane and Ian Clothier will present on SCANZ 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2013 at Balance-Unbalance.
As part of our Balance-Unbalance presentation on Solar Circuit Aotearoa New Zealand, where we will discuss issues around engaging with science and indigenous peoples, we are wanting to subvert the usual arrangements for presentation.
We would like the audience to download our presentation images to their mobile device. We will then not require the use of a projector with it's directional emphasis, will be able to sit in a circle, and we will also be able to leave the room and go for a short walk all as part of our presentation.
This emphasis on the physicality of experience, of interrogating the frameworks for activity, and taking alternate approaches all arise from the experience of producing SCANZ in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
The images can be downloaded from:
http://www.intercreate.org/2013/05/scanz-balance-unbalance/
Hope to see some of you join us.
Very best from the Intercreate Team,
Nina, Trudy and Ian.

We do need to update the email footers to include unsubscribe info as well, as that seems to have disappeared from them.
We just need to work out how to do that...
It's a bit disheartening to have a whole bunch of unsubscribe emails come through just when we're having some connecting projects coming up and actually talking onlist.
Helen's instructions should work, and if not please send any unsubscribe requests directly to me, rather than the list address.
More positively, It will be great to have so many ADA members and New Zealanders from all over at ISEA this year. We should try to organise a meet up outside the various panels we're on. If anyone knows sydney / the venues and has any ideas let us know : )

[Ada_list] Open call for entries: VIDA 15.0 Art and Artificial Life International Awards
International Awards. As we begin accepting submissions for this year's
awards, we will be looking for artistic projects that offer innovative
perspectives on life by using the latest technology and cutting-edge
scientific knowledge.
VIDA the Art and Artificial Life International Awards begun in 1999 by
Fundación Telefónica, it was created with the mission of supporting
creative endeavors in this singular field by rewarding the pioneering
efforts of artists. At a time when the concept of life finds itself once
again in uncharted territory, a wide range of artistic initiatives attempt
to illustrate and explore this phenomenon, examining its impact on our
collective consciousness and how it affects the cultural, technological and
social mindset. Over the past decade, VIDA has welcomed a variety of
interdisciplinary projects that respond to this situation and brought them
together in a single forum. Using formal strategies that push the
boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new
perspectives that force us to reconsider our pre-existing notions of life
and artificial life.
VIDA 15.0 supports excellence in artistic research into artificial life.
Projects that win a VIDA Award must be capable of expressing the complex
organization of life systems and the hybrid nature of life. The VIDA jury
will evaluate artistic projects that meet these criteria and, more
importantly, will select those projects that challenge our current
understanding and definition of life.
As in previous years, contestants are invited to submit proposals in one
(or both) of two categories:
CATEGORY "FINALISED PROJECTS"
In this category, Vida 15.0 rewards artistic artificial life projects
developed after the year 2011.
A total of 42,500 euros will be divided among the three winning projects
chosen by the jury:
First Prize: 18,000 euros;
Second Prize: 14,000 euros;
Third Prize: 8,000 euros.
Seven honorary mentions will also be awarded to projects chosen by the jury
from among the finalists.
In addition to the winners of the three main prizes, we will also choose
seven participants to receive honorable mentions and compete for the
special People's Choice Award. Of these mentions, only the People's Choice
Award is endowed with a cash prize, the amount of which will be 2,500
euros. The People's Choice Award will go to the project that receives the
most votes from the public in the seven days immediately following the
announcement of the official award winners (on October 2013). Votes will be
cast electronically on the VIDA website and social networks.
CATEGORY "INCENTIVES FOR PRODUCTION"
In this category, Vida 15.0 helps to finance artistic artificial life
projects that have not yet been produced. It is reserved for artists who
are citizens or residents of any country in Latin America, Spain or
Portugal. This category is also endowed with 40,000 euros to be divided
among five selected projects.
VIDA 15.0 launches the Incentives I+D Prize with the aim of encouraging
innovation using the latest artificial life technologies. Of the five
award-winning projects of the Incentives for Production category one will
receive additional support to assist with its technological development.
The awarded artist will receive assistance from experts on research,
development and innovation of Telefonica team in cutting-edge information
technologies. In addition to benefiting from regular advice and contact
online, the artist/s will also be invited to spend a maximum of one month
in Telefónica's innovation department in Barcelona (Spain).
IMPORTANT DATES
Project submissions will be accepted from 23rd April to 31th July 2013.
All projects must be submitted before midnight (Central European Time) on
31th July 2013.
JURY
The projects submitted will be examined by an international jury comprising
the following members: Mónica Bello (Spain), Andreas Broeckmann (Germany),
Rejane Cantoni (Brazil), Martin Kaltenbrunner (Austria), Seiko Mikami
(Japan), Sally-Jane Norman (New Zealand/France), Nell Tenhaaf (Canada) and
Laura Fernández-Orgaz (Fundación Telefónica Responsible for de Art and
Technology Projects).

carefully and complete the ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM posted on the Vida

Hi Su and the ADA list,
I will be coming to ISEA as a Theme Moderator for the Leonardo Education and Arts Forum on the 14th of June at Creative Studios, the NCCL (National Centre for Creative Learning), Level 3 Museum of Contemporary Art, 140 George St Sydney, NSW
from 2-5pm. The other theme moderators are Jane Prophet, Mike Philips, Andrea Polli, Nigel Helyer and Joanna Hoffmann. Nina Czegledy is convener. This is an educators forum and worthwhile for the sharing of experiences.
Also, I would recommend that people attend the ISEA General Meeting on Wednesday June 12th 11.30 till 1.30 New Law Auditorium 101 at The University of Sydney, Eastern Avenue, Camperdown, Sydney. Often people are aware of the organisation for each ISEA, but not the Board behind ISEA.
Usually, cities that want to host future ISEA events will present at the General Meetings. Although I'm not certain of this, it is likely that the next ISEA venue (Dubai 2014) will present on progress. It is possible that the 2015 venue team - Vancouver - might be there, along with people wanting to host 2016.
It helps quite a bit to know what is coming up and get a feel for how organisers are seeing their event. The presentations are never to the level of specific call, but the general area of what they want to do is covered. Sometimes there can be organisational detail such as project partners. It becomes possible to see 'behind the web page' of future ISEA hosts, as it were.

have a formidable reputation for critical collegial exchange within the
expanded field of digital and media arts. This September in Dunedin we mark
a decade of ADA Symposia in response to themes generated by the three year
ADA Network research project Mesh Cities Christchurch.
*Space : Network : Memory* welcomes proposals for provocations, panel
participation and presentations of work engaging with aspects of the broad

practitioners and performers, urban planners, historians, theorists,

*Space : Network : Memory* recognises that the situation of post-quake,
post-'blueprint', transitional Christchurch generates problems and
possibilities for all of Aotearoa/New Zealand. The *DUNEDIN* symposium will
continue this discussion. Dunedin is an historic city with many evident
remains of the past, yet, for seismic and economic reasons these
environments are in transition and their stories are under threat.
Dunedin's historic warehouse precinct is one focus of discussion, and will
feature as a site of conversation. Space : Network : Memory will engage
closely and playfully across Dunedin city.

art and media as they interplay and feedback with civic processes, and/or
re-engage people in urban and public spaces.
Your abstract should include: name, contact information, title and a 300

Re: [Ada_list] ADA Panel for ISEA 2013
CLUI is a great thought. I love love love their work (I even bought the coffee mug when I visited in 2006), but never thought of them in the chch context.
It would be great to get in touch with them for an exploratory think about how we could connect - John I'll send you some thoughts towards an email in the next few days. If anyone has any other thoughts along these lines please let us know!

I second that -- I did a 6-week residency at their Wendover, Utah facility in
2010, where I met & spent time with Matt Coolidge (@ clui@clui.org), one of the
founders. He is a phenomenal individual!
Much of their remit is very much about the US environment (and the effects of
military-industrial development on the wider landscape/social system/culture,
etc). But their approach is quite open and they have built up quite a profound
historical and contemporary knowledge-base as well as a strong human network.

Sounds very interesting. The only thought I can offer is perhaps to make
contact, if you havent already, for the center for land use
interpretation. They might be an interesting org to talk to for some
information or ideas on approaches to contextualise some of the themes
with regard to other experiences and events
it might turn up empty but could be worth at least a call

> Following the earthquake of February 2011, the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand, has been largely dismantled. Huge tracts of open ground spread out where buildings once stood, and much of the centre is still closed off to residents. Navigating around hurricane fences, demolition sites, and the street-gouges of caterpillar tracks has forced a renegotiation of the format of the city and its built and deconstructed spaces. At the same time, the command and control process of 'recovery' adopted by central government, against international best practice, explicitly reduces scope for community consultation in the reconstruction of the city. In a city that is exhausted and bewildered by natural disaster and its response, resistance feels fundamentally futile. And yet, in this place, it has never been so important.
>
> In the shadow of the demolitions, or rather the open spaces in their wake, artists are regenerating empty lots, blank walls, and social connections, in what seem like resistant creative acts. However the officially-designated rebuild-in-progress 'transitional city' relies on this creative endeavour, vesting artists and others with the responsibility of making the blank city more appealing to visitors and residents.
>
> Aotearoa Digital Arts' 'Mesh Cities' project explores the potential role of media art in transitional and future Christchurch. At this early stage in the project, this panel asks how productive media art can actually be for reimagining, remembering, reinvigorating, reconnecting with, or indeed resisting, urban and social space.

ecological crisis and the globalisation of
knowledge? This workshop positions
transdisciplinary approach as the key to
sustainable, meaningful solutions. It will
address the development of an art and science
cloud curriculum, based on cross-disciplinary
initiatives in North America and Europe in
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and
Mathematics (STEAM) and Science, Engineering Art
and Design education (SEAD).

[Ada_list] ADA Panel for ISEA 2013
There is an announcement and CFP on the very near horizon for our next symposium, in Dunedin this September, and also the documentation of the Easter launch event for the Mesh Cities Christchurch project. More on those to follow…
In the meantime, the next event on the ADA Network horizon is ISEA 2013, in Sydney from 7-16 June.
Su Ballard, Vicki Smith and I are hosting a panel discussion for the ISEA conference, which is currently scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday June 11, although the final programme has not yet been published.
The panel abstract and details are below, but we will be using it as a chance to elicit ideas, examples, feedback, and responses from conference attendees from around the world on the possibilities of 'Media Art in the Transitional City'. As with the rest of this research programme, this emerges from the Christchurch 'situation', but extends out to the rest of NZ and the world.
This is fairly explicitly responding to the conference theme 'resistance is fertile'...
Please post any feedback, examples, thoughts, etc, any of you have around these ideas. And, please, let us know if you will be in Sydney for / at the same time as ISEA and are interested in participating in some way.

Media art and the transitional city

[Ada_list] SCANZ 2015 review
As part of Intercreate's Kahikatea funding there will be a SCANZ 2015, and following from discussion since SCANZ2013, it is highly likely the theme will be Water and Peace.
As part of the organisation of this event, we are wanting to review SCANZ. Basically we are trying to find out if our model is still relevant.
It is our intention to use online survey forms to gather information. Prior to creating questions, I thought it would be good to commence the process with some discussion on this list.
Currently we try and get 15-25 participants together from mid January to early February and cover people's accommodation and food. We also in 2013 had an exhibition, mostly of work not part of a residency project (two weeks is extremely short to bring a project to full exhibition level). We always have a hui, wananga or symposium, either at the beginning or the end of the residency.
What other residency/workshop/hui models do people have experience of? What different ways of doing things would people like to put forward?
Does our current model work for you? If not, what would it take to make it work for you? If it does work for you, what should continue?
Rather than me sending a heap of questions all at once, maybe people could respond to the above questions, and we can take the discussion from that point on.
We would love to get your feedback on these matters.

Subject: [Ada_list] Media art projects call for proposals
Hi ADA'ers,
Intercreate is pleased to announce the commissioning of two Media Art Projects to be realised in 2014. This is an open call for project proposals, which are due on July 1st 2013. This date is firm as the one project is for the Festival of Lights which has printing deadlines.
Hopefully though this timeframe will give people the opportunity to reflect and consider their proposal.
The Media Art Projects are open to Aotearoa New Zealand artists here and abroad. There is one project with a budget of $6000 which has an open location and resolution date in 2014, and one $3000 project that must be realised in the Fernery of Pukekura Park, during the Festival of Lights in January/February 2014. These budget figures include all associated costs.
The project description page is:
http://www.intercreate.org/2013/03/media-art-projects/
It is important that proposals respond to the information on that page. The proposals will be blind reviewed. All details about applying are on the webpage.
I'm happy to respond to any queries you might have, and to offer feedback up to the submission date.
Best and good luck
