To: WAN@jiscmail.ac.uk

*Intermission: An audio portrait of place*
*Open call for radio projects - Deadline September 9*

ECHOES is a programme of events for the city of Lisbon
that explores the experience of LISTENING and PLACE. Part
of this programme is a series of curated radio broadcasts
in partnership with Stress.Fm and the Lisbon Architecture
Triennale. The programme invites a rethinking of the role of
radio and its ability to intervene within local and international
communities.
*
*
*Our second broadcast,*
*19- 22 September, is **titled 'Intermission'.*

'Intermission' invites an international response asking you
to make an 'audio portrait' of your locality by recording a 20
minute walk- mapping the air space between a and b.
The ambition for this project is to create a 3 day radio
broadcast that maps a patchwork of sonic landscapes from
Bristol to Bangalore, Lisbon to L.A and Mexico City to Milford-
On-Sea.

*All tracks will be fully credited with weblinks on the Echoes site.*

[Ada_list] Update for Seven Octaves plus a Third exhibition

Apologles for the spamming!
Seven Octaves plus a Minor Third; Artists respond to the keys of the piano.
Audio Foundation
5.30 pm
Thursday 8 August

Exhibition curated by Amelia Harris

The piano is a standard of sorts, organising the playing of music into a monochromatic world of straight lines and rectangles, from which much clunking and beauty has been born. This exhibition gathers together members of the sound community, musicians, pianists and those humble clunkers to examine the piano, key by key.

Participants:

Isobel Thom
Stephen Bain
Stefan Neville
Ducklingmonster
Erena Johnson
Ian-John Hutchinson
Hermione Johnson
Balamohan Shingade

Amelia Harris is an artist, curator, film producer and dabbler. She likes to take a look at places and objects that have become stale, or need to be re-examined, for the pleasure and challenge of reinvigoration. Amelia produced the feature film 'Oracle Drive' that premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival this year, curated public programs for The Film Archive for 3 years, as well as producing a couple of feature documentaries on Auckland with Gabriel White. As an artist Amelia has shown at the George Fraser Gallery, Gus Fisher carpark - Auckland International Arts Festival 07, The Fine Arts Library, St Paul St and most recently at Rm as part of 'Expanded Map'.
Amelia has an MFA from Elam and a BA in film from UOA.

[Ada_list] Oenosthesia - An interactive Sound and Wine Experience

Oenosthesia with Jo Burzynka (Stanier Black-Five)
Audio Foundation, 4 Poynton Terrace, Sub- Basement of the Parisian Tie Factory
Friday July 19th
6.30 sharp
A highly recommended evening and finishes by 8 pm to enable people to go to Goblin in the Film Festival

$10 presale tickets available via Undertheradar -
http://www.undertheradar.co.nz/ticket/2900/Jo-Burzynka---Oenosthesia-Sound-and-Wine-Presentation.utr

Oenosthesia is a ground breaking interactive exploration of sound and taste created by sound artist and wine writer, Jo Burzynska (aka Stanier Black-Five). This soundscape using her recordings of the vineyards and wineries of Irpinia in Italy, explores the significant way that sound influences the perception of taste through the combination of the changing timbres and frequencies in the piece with a selection of different wines from the region. The work was created last year during Burzynska's residency in Southern Italy, and is possibly the first piece of gustatory/sound art created both from and including wine. It was premiered at the Interferenze New Art Festival's Factory of Art Rurality and Media 2012 (FARM2012) in Tufo, Italy and this programme is the first time the installation has been presented in New Zealand.

As a prelude to the evening, there will be a showing of "FARM - Factory of Art, Rurality and (New) Media", directed by Interferenze Director, Leandro Pisano. This short film documents Burzynska's project and the "Suoni dal confine" residency programme of which it was part, in which international artists were invited to embrace rurality in the creation of works of sonic art in the Italian countryside. Burzynska will then personally introduce the project, her own theories and the science of sensory interaction before those attending experience Oenosthesia. The installation lasts 25 minutes and includes tasting of three wines from Irpinia.

Jo Burzynska is one of the country's leading wine critics, writing a weekly wine column in the New Zealand Herald's Viva magazine, as well as contributing to specialist wine publications worldwide. She is also an active sound artist, recording and performing internationally under the name, Stanier Black-Five, making work largely based on the manipulation of her own environmental recordings. In recent years she has been exploring the synergies between taste and sound through her own research and hosting music and wine matching workshops.

With thanks to Irpinia's regional consortium of GAL Partenio, which sponsored the residency and the featured wines; Leandro Pisano for curating the residency and the Audio Foundation for hosting the event.

More information about Jo Burzynska's wine writing can be found at: joburzynska.com & sound art at: stanierblackfive.com
